What is the SIG?
Project photography is about creating a body of work from a personal project rather than single competition style images.
The primary aim of the Projects SIG is to encourage creativity and share knowledge and skills that will help us all improve our project photography as well as having some fun along the way practising the skills that come with completing a project.
By definition, your project will be personal but the challenges and rewards are shared and the SIG provides a supportive environment where we discuss our projects, seek ideas and advice and help each other to keep going!
This seasons’ projects are as varied as Fruiting Slime Molds to Scenes Shot Through Rainy Car Windows to Man Modified Landscapes and lots more!
Who is it for?
If you are looking for a more creative outlet for your photography then a project gives your the space to be creative, to experiment and develop as a photographer. The images in a project often wouldn’t do that well as a standalone image in a competition but put together with other images you can better tell a story or convey a feeling.
In the normal club calendar we do not actually spend much time talking about our photography or the work of published photographers so if this appeals then the SIG is for you.
We also aim to produce a physical output for most projects, whether that is a zine, a book, a calendar, an exhibition or a website.
What do you think a new member would learn?
The SIG is not a formal training environment but one where techniques and ideas can be shared and practised, learning from each other. We cover all aspects of Projects photography from project conception to final output production.
Undertaking a project can be a challenge – it takes time, it will challenge your creativity, there will be highs and lows along the way BUT you will definitely develop creatively as a photographer and learn new skills such as project briefs, image selection and sequencing and print production and maybe even find your photographic style.
Because we spend a fair amount of time just talking about progress on our projects you will also pick up ideas and tips from other members.
How Often do you meet?
We meet monthly on Zoom during the main club season for everyone to discuss their project and ask questions of the group to help progress the projects. We also have short presentations from time to time on specific aspects of the project lifecycle: from writing project briefs or artist statements to final zine layouts.
New for next season will be some practical sessions where we will create and complete mini projects in a day!
So if any of the above appeals to you, please join the Projects SIG.
