SUMMARY:8 X 10
DESCRIPTION:In the years we have been running the 10 x 8 evening we have enjoyed a wonderful and varied selection of talks and presentations. Some even done by a friend for the author. The most striking thing has been the subject matter. The most wondrous  and interesting things.A very popular and original evening. \nThis is what the evening is about; \n10 x 8 refers to eight club members having ten minutes each to make a presentation to the club. This can be anything you like. For example; a selection of your best images; a selection of your latest images; a selection of your favourite images from other photographers; an AV or AVs you have made; some equipment that you would like to demonstrate; or probably many other things I have not thought of. \nWhat you need to do; \nThere is only time for eight members to take part\, so first come first served. Just let us know if you would like to take one of the ten minute spots. And that’s it.

SUMMARY:Bernard Hinton (Coate Water)\, Series and Creative Competitions
DESCRIPTION:Three more competitions judged by yourselves. \nHere is the basic information for each competition from our rule book page; \n  \nThe “Bernard Hinton” Competition \nMedium:           Digital only\nCategory:         Combined\nJudge:            Club Members\nTrophy:           Pewter Cup \nThis is named after a past member of the club who took a great interest in photographing Swindon’s Parks and gardens. \nThe digital image must have been taken in the nominated Swindon park or garden during the preceding or current club season\, the venue of which will be published in the programme each year. \nSeries Competition \nMedium:           Prints & Digital\nCategory:         Combined\nJudge:            Club Members\nTrophy:           Prints (cup)\, digital (cup) \nA series is defined as a sequence of images with some form of link discernable by the viewer. \nPrints:  Each series of related images may be of 3\,4\,5 or 6 prints.  (These may be presented all on a single mount or individually.)   There is no restriction on mount size provided the mount is not so large that it would be difficult to display for judging. (Members are asked to act reasonably as regards this issue). \nMembers will be responsible for laying out their own prints for the competition in such a way as they intend the series to be viewed. \nDigital:  A sequence of between 4 and 8 images submitted together and named using a sequential 1 digit number starting at 1 followed by a space and the series title.\ne.g. \n“1 Winning Images.jpg”\n“2 Winning Images.jpg” \nA black divider image will be provided at projection time to start and end the sequence (these will be images sequence 0 and 9). \n(For projection we will use Faststone software\, for a period of 6 seconds each\, with a Transition Effect of “Fade In and Out” and an Effect Duration of “5:Longest”. ) \nThe Creative Competition \nMedium: Digital only\nClass: Combined\nJudge: Club Members\nTrophy: Creative Trophy \nCreative photography is an extension of conventional photography into creative art. They are images that have been modified during or after exposure above and beyond simple manipulation. The purpose is to stimulate creative thoughts and encourage experimentation with new ideas. \nThere is no limit to when the components of the image were taken\, however\, the creation will have been constructed for the current season. \n  \nFull details on the “Rule book” page of the website.

SUMMARY:Martin Cooper LRPS giving his talk; Mono Memories
DESCRIPTION:Here is Martin describing his approach to photography from his website. \n“I first took up photography as a child when my Dad bought me my first camera\, a Kodak Brownie 127\, which I used to snap all sorts of things from my pet Guinea Pigs to school trips. That was replaced by an Ilford Sportsman\, my first 35mm camera. I still have it today although it hasn’t been used in decades. \nIt wasn’t until I joined my first camera club in the ‘80s that I first realised that this could be a serious hobby and so it has developed from there into something of a passion. \nI now have a particular interest in landscapes which\, from my base in Stroud in the Cotswolds – at the heart of the Five Valleys – seems quite appropriate somehow. \nLet’s get one thing clear: I’m not the sort of photographer who gets up in the early hours to get to some distant location at the crack of dawn to catch the first rays of sunlight creeping over yonder hill. Nice though that is\, it’s too simplistic for my liking. The most important factor in any image is the content or subject matter before you. So\, first and foremost\, I choose my subjects very carefully and then make the most of the conditions prevalent at the time – or wait until they are right. That requires patience but it works in the end. \nThe most important factor in producing any photographic image is does it truly represent not just what you saw at the time but what you felt and experienced? And\, of course\, do you like it ………? \nMany years of effort have paid off over the last couple of years which have seen my first published images in Amateur Photographer and the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year along with a few awards including medals in the 123rd Toronto International Salon and Midphot and various ribbons. \nFor the record\, I have been a member and Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society for many years now and\, whilst I value that privilege highly\, the most important thing is to get out and take photographs at every opportunity.” \nMore information on his website here \n

SUMMARY:Victoria Hillman BSc giving her talk; Creative Nature
DESCRIPTION:Here is Victoria explaining a little about herself from her website; \n“I am a scientist by training with a BSc in zoology with marine zoology from the University of Wales\, Bangor and an MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation from Edinburgh Napier University\, photography for a long time was just a hobby. \nI don’t have any photographic qualifications or training\, I am completely self-taught learning as I go\, looking at what I like or don’t like and being critical of my own work looking at ways to improve. From an early age I have enjoyed being outdoors and had a fascination for all things living. This was an interest that was encouraged and nurtured by my family and teachers. In the years that followed I developed a deep understanding and passion for the natural world and knew that working with animals was the career path for me. Alongside my studies I began to develop my photography with the help of family\, friends and teachers. This development is ongoing\, learning more every time I go out with my camera and has blossomed into my own unique way of portraying the natural world. \nThroughout university and the years that followed I spent time travelling\, learning and experiencing different cultures and they way they view their natural surroundings and wildlife\, photographing nature and volunteering on research projects. I now regularly take photographs for Secret World Wildlife Rescue and also run the photography days to aid them in their publicity and fund raising. \nI am an Ambassador for Manfrotto\, award winning photographer and 2013 also saw me invited to be a National Geographic Explorer writing regular updates on National Geographic funded research in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania for the Transylvanian Wildlife Project. I have contributed both articles and images to various magazines\, books\, calendars\, TV series and BBC websites.” \n for much more information\, please go to her website here

SUMMARY:DATE CHANGE - The Summer Programme - Crofton Beam Engine
DESCRIPTION:This evening will now be postponed until 23rd August. \nThere will be NO meeting on 16th August. \nFull details and an explanation coming soon!!! \n  \n  \n\n\n\n16th August\nThe two steam engines at Crofton\, were built 200 years ago to pump water 12m up to a pond at the summit of the Kennet & Avon canal.  Today electric pumps carry out the job of topping up the canal with water.  But the steam engines still work and are run a few weekends each year. \n  \nOn Thursday 16th\, the volunteers at the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust have agreed to stay open late for our visit (6.00-8.00pm).  Entry will cost £4.00 per person. \nhttps://www.croftonbeamengines.org/ \n  \nPub:  The Three Horseshoes\, Stibb Green\, Burbage.  Meet at the pub at 8-8.30pm. \nhttp://www.threehorseshoesburbage.co.uk/ \n  \nHow to get there \nCrofton Beam engines are 21 miles south-east of Swindon.  From Swindon follow signs to Marlborough then take the A346 towards Salisbury.  At the Burbage roundabout take the A338 to East Grafton then turn left up Dark Lane following signs to Crofton and the beam engines.  There is an on-site car park.  Access is limited for wheelchair users\, and steep stairs inside the pumping station make access difficult for anyone using walking sticks. \n  \nCrofton Beam engine steaming weekend – 23-24 June (https://www.croftonbeamengines.org/events/)\n\n\n\n
