DESCRIPTION:AVs are fun and easier to make than you may think. Sometimes the best and most effective are simply images to music. You Tube and Vimeo are full of them. All sorts of subjects\, styles\, quality\, and reasons for them being there. \nAn AV is recommended for bringing a great holiday or family occasion back in your mind whenever you play it. \nIf you want any further information please just ask. \n  \nHere are the rules for the AV competition from our “rule book” page. \nAny questions – please ask. It really is easier than it looks! \nA-V Competition \nMedium:           Digital AV\nCategory:         Combined\nJudge:  Club Members (This may be external if entries warrant)\nTrophy:           Shield \nMembers may enter up to three sequences\, but total showing time may not exceed 12 minutes duration.  (There are no minimum limits.) \nNo sequence can display details of the competitor’s name or club. \nAn AV production submitted for the SPS AV Competition must predominantly consist of a sequence of still photographic images together with an accompanying synchronised sound track. The use of third party images\, animated graphics\, video clips or other visual material\, whilst not excluded\, must be limited and be appropriate to the production. Sequences with more than 25% in photographs or duration of such third party images\, animated graphics or video clips\, are not eligible for the SPS AV Competition. \nIt is the responsibility of the entrant to determine their need for any necessary music performance licenses and\, if necessary\, to obtain them. \nIt is expected that the major part of the work will have been done by the members or member entering the sequence and that they will reveal any work carried out by others\, including the use of third party images. \nAll AVs must be capable of running on the club computer without the need of additional software.

SUMMARY:London Salon of Photography
DESCRIPTION:The aim of the London Salon is to exhibit only that class of photographic work in which there is distinct evidence of artistic feeling and execution.\nThis is a short history of the Salon\n\nIn its early years\, photography was used almost exclusively to record the appearance of people\, places and things. The processes and materials available set serious limits to picture-making\, and very few attempted to use photography to make artistic pictures. Later in the nineteenth century\, some of those who had trained in art took up photography\, which led to placing more emphasis on selecting and arranging rather than on technique and materials – art rather than fact. \n A number of influential photographers broke away from the Royal Photographic Society in May 1892 in protest against its emphasis over a number of years on science and technology at the expense of other aspects of photography. They set up the Linked Ring Brotherhood as an international body to promote artistic photography. The Linked Ring held its first Photographic Salon in 1893. From about 1908\, many disputes arose on attitudes to selection procedures and this led to the setting up of the London Salon in 1910. \n Open International Photographic Salons have been held in nearly every year since 1910 \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Whatever your personal photographic style\, Paul is an accomplished public speaker who is always well worth listening to. \nHere is a little about him from his website; \nPaul Colley CB OBE MA ARPS is a wildlife photographer and author seeking to make images count in the conservation of marine\, freshwater and other wildlife environments. The majority of income generated by Paul’s talks and his book & image sales is re-invested directly in wildlife and habitat conservation projects.  \nChairman of the British Society of Underwater Photographers and an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society\, he has won wide recognition for his photography\, including overall winner 2018 and multiple category winner in the British Wildlife Photography Awards. Although an underwater photography specialist and category winner in Underwater Photographer of the Year\, he is increasingly noted for his innovative bat and bird photography.  \nHis images are used widely in conservation\, most recently in the creation of marine protected areas in Cambodia and the South Atlantic Ocean\, where he works with Fauna and Flora International  and the Blue Marine Foundation. \nPaul designs\, builds and develops novel equipment to photograph wildlife. DESCRIPTION: 8 X 10  is always one of the best attended and most praised evenings in our calendar. Expect the unexpected. \nThis is what the evening is about; \n10 x 8 refers to eight club members having ten minutes each to make a presentation to the club. This can be anything you like\, as long as it has a connection to photography. For example; a selection of your best images; a selection of your latest images; a selection of your favourite images from other photographers; an AV or AVs you have made; some equipment that you would like to demonstrate; or probably many other things I have not thought of. \nWhat you need to do; \nThere is only time for eight members to take part\, so first come first served. DESCRIPTION:Three more competitions judged by yourselves. \nHere is the basic information for each competition from our rule book page; \n  \nThe “Bernard Hinton” Competition \nMedium:           Digital only\nCategory:         Combined\nJudge:            Club Members\nTrophy:           Pewter Cup \nThis is named after a past member of the club who took a great interest in photographing Swindon’s Parks and gardens. \nThe digital image must have been taken in the nominated Swindon park or garden during the preceding or current club season\, the venue of which will be published in the programme each year. \nSeries Competition  \nMedium:           Prints & Digital\nCategory:         Combined\nJudge:            Club Members\nTrophy:           Prints (cup)\, digital (cup) \nA series is defined as a sequence of images with some form of link discernable by the viewer. \nPrints:  Each series of related images may be of 3\,4\,5 or 6 prints.  (These may be presented all on a single mount or individually.)   There is no restriction on mount size provided the mount is not so large that it would be difficult to display for judging. (Members are asked to act reasonably as regards this issue). \nMembers will be responsible for laying out their own prints for the competition in such a way as they intend the series to be viewed. \nDigital:  A sequence of between 4 and 8 images submitted together and named using a sequential 1 digit number starting at 1 followed by a space and the series title.\ne.g. \n“1 Winning Images.jpg”\n“2 Winning Images.jpg” \nA black divider image will be provided at projection time to start and end the sequence (these will be images sequence 0 and 9). \n(For projection we will use Faststone software\, for a period of 6 seconds each\, with a Transition Effect of “Fade In and Out” and an Effect Duration of “5:Longest”. ) \nThe Creative Competition \nMedium: Digital only\nClass: Combined\nJudge: Club Members\nTrophy: Creative Trophy \nCreative photography is an extension of conventional photography into creative art. They are images that have been modified during or after exposure above and beyond simple manipulation. The purpose is to stimulate creative thoughts and encourage experimentation with new ideas. \nThere is no limit to when the components of the image were taken\, however\, the creation will have been constructed for the current season. \n  \nFull details on the “Rule book” page of the website.

DESCRIPTION:John is a member of Arena Photographers Here is what they say about him;\n \n“John has been a prolific photographer for over 35 years. He gained the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1984 and a Fellowship the following year. Until December 2009 he was a member of the RPS Travel Distinctions Panel and Chair of the Visual Art Panel. He has also served on the RPS Nature Panel and the Fellowship Board. In 2008 he was awarded the Fenton Medal for services to the Society. As well as ‘Arena’\, he is a member of the London Salon and the Zoological Photo Club. \nHis images have been exhibited extensively in Britain and in various countries around the world gaining many awards and he has also acted as a selector at countless national and international exhibitions. He works in both monochrome and colour with his current images being captured digitally. He is essentially a photographer rather than a digital artist\, preferring to capture images ‘in the field’ rather than creating them in Photoshop. His current areas of interest are ‘the landscape’\, macro work in the urban environment and wildlife photography.”
