General Questions About SPS

Can you tell me more about the club meetings?

The club meets every Thursday at 7:30pm – 10pm from September to May. These meeting will vary in their content each week. We have a variety of speakers, competitions, battles and exhibitions.

There is a summer outdoor program which runs between May and August and this will be advertised in the club program nearer the time.

 

I have a new camera, can you teach me how to use it?

We do not run formal classes for people new to photography but we do have a lot of friendly people who will happily show you the details of the camera you own and would be able to help and provide tips and information on taking great pictures.
We do however run members nights where we pick a subject, e.g. landscapes and show you how to edit your pictures digitally or talk about how a picture was taken (please see the calendar of events for more info).

Do you run tuition courses for Photography?

We have Photographic items to sell, can you help?

We do not advertise any items for sale on our website, however you may bring them to the club if you wish to make them a donation to the club for our use.

I am looking for a Wedding Photographer, can you help?

We do not respond to questions regarding photographers being required at events or weddings on a fee or free basis.

How do the Summer Evenings Work?

People meet at the chosen location (time will be specified on the calendar) and normally break off into smaller groups and take some photos. At about 9pm we meet back at a the designated local pub and catch up with everyone for a drink.

All the details will be added to the calendar when the locations are chosen with all the meeting times.

What do I get for my Membership?

I am not a member, can I still come to the Summer program events?

Yes, you are very welcome to see what we do and pick up a few tips.

How do I become a member?

At the moment go to the join us page and email membership@swindonphotosoc.org.uk  for an application form. we will then give you access to our Zoom meetings. This is only until we can meet at our usual venue again. Then the details are below.

  Come along to any Thursday evening club meeting and talk to us. Fill out a simple form and we will do the rest.

How much does it cost to Join SPS?

I plan on attending by car, where can I park?

The community centre has limited parking available so attend early if you have a disability and need close access to your vehicle. There is parking available in the surrounding roads but please do not obstruct the residents driveways or community centre entrance.

Can I just come along to a Thursday meeting?

Yes, we always welcome newcomers to the Thursday evening meetings. There is a £5 visitor’s fee but this will be refunded if you decide to become a member.

I am going to come along to the meeting tonight as a new member, what time should I arrive?

We aim to start each evening at 7:30pm so please come along earlier if you are a new member. On competition nights we usually display the print images to allow members to view the pictures before the judging takes place.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes, however for non-members there is a visitor’s fee of £5. Please see the Join us page for full details of this cost.

I am under 18, can I come to the club?

Only if you are over 16 and accompanied by a full club member that has parental or legally delegated responsibility for you.

If I’m not a member can I still come to any occasional special workshop sessions?

We’re sorry but, unfortunately, we can only run these sessions for members.

What is a ‘Battle’ night?

A battle night is where we host members from other clubs to join us in a friendly competition of each group’s best images. The images are scored by an independant judge and the totals for each club calculated. Its a great chance to meet some new faces.

I want to come to a Thursday night meeting, do I need to bring anything?

You do not need to bring anything such as work or images to show. If you are new to photography and want to know more about your camera, please bring it along and will do our best to assist you with any questions you may have about it.
